Help-Portrait Boston

What an incredible day! Fourteen other photographers and I came together today to take some pictures just to make people feel good. And look at that. It made us feel good too.

The brainchild of celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart, Help-Portrait is “a community of photographers, coming together across the world, to use their photography skills to give back to their local community. On or around December 12th, photographers around the world will be grabbing their cameras, finding people in need, and taking their picture. When the prints are ready, the photographs get delivered. Yep. It really is that easy.”

This Boston crew had an amazing shoot today at Germaine Lawrence, a residential treatment center for adolescent girls. We shot over 50 girls, aged 11-18, and though I don’t want to put any of the girls’ photos up here, here are a few I snapped of the crazy photographers and the setup there.

We set up four “stations” in the gym:

And the best part was the group of volunteer hair and makeup people (thanks to Empire School of Beauty in Warwick, RI) who came and did hair and makeup on all 50 girls! The aroma of hairspray wafted waaaaay down the hall :) But the girls really felt like rock stars. You could see it when they came for their photos – their eyes were twinkling.

Lisa grabbing some crazy shots of two of our fabulous volunteers (as we waited for hair and makeup on the girls… this stuff takes time, after all!):

See what I mean? You go there, hoping to make other people happy, and you just get happy yourself.

Meg getting a kick out of her subject:

A couple of the sweet photographers gave the girls a chance behind the lens, too – this girl has a future in fashion photography ahead of her…

Another switcheroo – photographer as subject:

It was not only an incredible day because the girls were so awesome, but it was also great to get to spend some time with like-minded photog peeps. This team of people has been meeting and planning this event for months now, and I can’t thank them enough for letting me join them after I wasn’t able to attend ANY of the planning meetings.

Great day, gorgeous photos – I’m so excited for the girls to get their prints (kindly donated by iPrintfromhome.com). I think they’re really going to love them.

Great narrative. Glad to meet you and look forward to seeing more of your work!

Julia Snider - December 12, 2009 - 10:59 pm

Hey Jess, what a fun time. You are on the ball getting this together so fast! I'm Julia, the volunteer in the photo with Tom.

Rich - December 12, 2009 - 11:13 pm

What a day!
Great stuff Jess.
I too tired to post tonight but I'll have some suff in the morning.

Jess

Great blog. You nailed it as well as your shots behind the camera.

You guys made their day with your skill and I was glad to be a part of it

Brian Matiash - December 13, 2009 - 8:50 am

Jess,

I am proud to have had the opportunity to see you in action. You did such a great job shooting the girls and assisting the other photographers by emoting with some of the more introverted models.

I look forward to shooting with you again for Help Portrait next year.

Also, like Nate said – wonderful narrative. The shots are perfect.

Best,

Brian

Star Wars and a bright xmas tree

This past Saturday was raining buckets, and I called these guys and said – I think we should do this after the holidays are over. It’s just too gross out, and I know O will have a better time if we can go outside. We went back and forth, and his mom told me she had the tree up… and wanted to get some xmas cards done… we’d already rescheduled due to weather a bunch of times this fall… so we went for it.

(By the way, what has been UP with our weekend weather this fall? Nuts!)

So when I hear that someone has their tree up, I picture nice twinkley lights as a background, but not really that much of an impact on my ambient light for the photos. I was so excited when I saw their funky white artificial tree – complete with super lighting! Look at this – my top pic for their xmas card shot this year:

This handsome boy is four this year – his fourth photoshoot with me. Wow, so big!

I couldn’t resist. Totally cheesy, I know. But I *LOVE* ;)

I love this, especially the glow from the tree on him:

Kooky kid :)

Han Solo’s holiday card picture (complete with matching Star Wars shirt in the bkgrd):

And anyone who follows my blog knows what a sucker I am for eyelashes.
See…

Great to see you guys!

Eight weeks old, and so exciting

I can’t believe it took me this long to meet beautiful little girl E. I was so excited to meet her – her momma was my Student Advisor at Conn College when I was a freshman… I love being able to give back to people years later!

So although color is never my fave, I had to snap a few in color of baby E in her costume. Adorable pumpkin!

Those teenie toes:

Those teenie fingers:

Giggling with her daddy:

Gorgeous girl! Look at those eyes :)

The whole fam:

Smiles for mama:

Isn’t she such a tall girl? I’m partial to tall girls ;)

And JJ, I left this in color just for you. Those eyes are still blue like mama’s!

Love this yawning swaddle:

It was such a treat to meet your sweet girl and see the new house – thanks for having us!

Backyard Halloween time

So again this year I invited our neighbors over for a photoshoot in our backyard, to get excited for Halloween. I hate how the pictures we take on Halloween night need to use flash, so I like to get some great shots before the big night.

We were joined by…

A lovely mouse:

One of the monsters from Monsters Inc. I can’t remember the name of the monster! Cute nonetheless :)

A veterinarian:

A buzzy bee:

Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz:

A big sister bear:

And a little brother bear:

Buzz Lightyear and his twin brother Wall-E:

The cutest cow in the land:

Penguin sisters:

Hannah Montana, with her trusty wig and mic:

A pirate:

The vet checking out the cow:

Wow, the Statue of Liberty brought her homemade Chrysler Building!

A fire-breathing dragon:

Ariel:

And another wow – homemade Palace Guards!

So much fun to see all you guys. I love this time of year!

My maternity leave, Week 3. Meeting AL for the first time…

My cool actress sister’s show had a night off this weekend, so she hopped a plane from Washington for just one night to meet Sadie and see Annie. Annie was so proud to introduce her to her baby sister.

Here we are in week 3, and Annie’s still relishing her big sister role. Given the option, she’d kiss and hug “her baby” a zillion times a day. It’s a little exhausting, worrying she’s going to smoosh her, but pretty great at the same time :)

Ev’s loving being the dad of two girls:

And Sadie’s settling in to our family really well. She’s found her voice – gives us a good holler to tell us things, but she’s just such a cutie it’s hard to be frustrated:

We had fun at the Arnold Arboretum today – had to snap a daddy/Annie pic too…

We loved having AL visit – come back soon!

I’ll do one more Week 4 post next week – and then it’s back to work for me! June is actually fully booked at this point (although I have a waitlist for weekend appointments, and I think I might have one or two weekdays available, so let me know if you’re interested in those), and I’m taking July as another month of maternity leave… but if you’re interested in a summer shoot, let me know because August has lots of times still available!

Whitney - June 4, 2009 - 9:08 am

Oh my gosh…what a total sweetheart! Glad to see everything went well!!! Can't wait to see you again sometime in November!

Whitney (and Cleo)

Week 2 of my maternity leave…

You didn’t think I’d only post pictures from the first few days of Sadie’s life, did you?  If only I’d had a blog back when Annie was born, I would have inundated the blogosphere with Annie pics.

And now, since her sister has just tons of pictures from her early days, I had to snap a few today while her big sister was at school.  Look at those big eyes!

And looking lovingly up at her dad:

Look at those rolls, already!

Wait a minute, is she smiling, and only 11 days old?  To be fair, it’s not exactly something that happens often yet, but I’m so excited the shutter clicked when it did.  And, she’s obviously brilliant.

Last but not least – tiny toes.  Next week I’ll include her big sister again, but wanted to focus on the little girl by herself a bit here.

Red Sox (oh all right, and Yankee) sweater photoshoot

So if you get my newsletter, you know about my client Mollygoggles, who makes these fantastic baseball-themed sweaters.  I did a “call” for Red Sox/Yankee sweater models about a month or so ago, and had an incredible response… over 80 children’s parents wrote me back and said their children would love to help us model these sweaters.  It was a nice problem to have, and luckily I left it to Kati at Mollygoggles to choose her models.

After a couple of rainouts, we ended up with a gorgeous morning today, and a pile of fantastic kids showed up to smile, play and model their little hearts out:

And this gorgeous girl was such a sport… she was willing to model the enemy’s sweater, and even look cute doing it:

And this beauty didn’t mind spending time in Yankees garb at all – wouldja believe we have Yankees fans here in Boston?  Ah, it’s OK, we love them anyway!

You guys were wonderful, fabulous, perfect models, thanks so much for coming out this morning.  I have to force myself to put these pictures away for a week or two and finish up some other work, but as soon as they’re all ready I’ll send you an email.  Thanks again!

Concord Carpenter - April 9, 2009 - 5:19 pm

Great stuff! i enjoyed your blog.

Jess, what did you do today?

I had an incredible day today as my daughter’s nursery school’s photographer – the kids were fantastic.  And of course my favorite pictures are the crazy-faced ones.  Had to do a little collage because they made me smile so much…
What did you do today? by you.
Thanks for a great day, guys!  All the photos will be ready by the end of next week.

Halloween costumes in my backyard today

We had about twenty cuties from my street in Milton (yes, we love our neighborhood – it’s kidfest) come over for costume photos today.

We had so many fantastic costumes – we had some construction workers:

So sweet..! All the Halloween costumes are super cute and adorable.

Three cousins turn one

A couple of weeks ago, three cousins, all with birthdays a few weeks from each other, turned one.  I’ve said it before, but I find that birthday parties are best photographed in color.  So although I usually love b&w best… here are some color party shots.  The families enjoyed some delicious food:

And they were lucky enough to kick off their 2nd year of life with some of the most gorgeous cupcakes I’ve ever seen! (And I just found out their mom is a pro – here’s a link to her cupcake company.)

And then the three birthday cuties enjoyed their cupcakes:

Fun Baby Naming Festivities

I’ve been taking pictures of these guys for a couple of years now, and I was honored to be asked to take photos at their youngest daughter’s Baby Naming on the Cape last weekend. As I’ve mentioned before, I find that childrens’ parties just cry out for color photos – hence the color shots you see here. Little B was an absolute dream for the whole party:

Her big brother J tried out the waterslide before the rest of the revelers arrived:

Gorgeous smile

Let me introduce the lovely C – I was so lucky to get to take her picture earlier this week for the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE)’s Annual Heart Gallery. I’ve donated a session to the Heart Gallery every year since its inception in 2005, and I’ve met some amazing kids.

The Heart Gallery is an exhibit of portraits of children in the state’s foster care system in need of adoption. Since 2005, 75 percent of the children who’ve been featured are now with safe, permanent, adoptive families.

C is twelve, and told me she’s really excited for dance camp this summer.

2871, originally uploaded by Boston Baby Photos.

I’m supposed to submit my favorite five shots to the Heart Gallery for them to choose the one that’ll be in the exhibit… but I’m having such a tough time!

2789, originally uploaded by Boston Baby Photos.

The problem is that C’s smile is too pretty, and I just love so many of the pictures it’s hard to choose only five.

2906, originally uploaded by Boston Baby Photos.

Can you see why I’m having a tough time?

2831, originally uploaded by Boston Baby Photos.

OK, last one. I loved meeting you this week, C – hope you like the pictures… wonder which one will be chosen for the Gallery?

2905, originally uploaded by Boston Baby Photos.

Since I wasn’t blogging back then – here’s a shot from my 2006 Heart Gallery session – I loved how sweet they were together!

And my first Heart Gallery session ever, back in late 2004 for the 2005 gallery… I loved these guys so much. I came home and talked to my husband about the idea of adopting them, really. It didn’t make sense for us at the time, but whoever did adopt them is really lucky. It’s true of all these kids – they’re all just so amazing, I’ve been so happy to get to meet them all over the years.

A Colorful 1st Birthday

If you’ve visited the blog before, or if you know my style of photography, you might be wondering why the photos on this post are color. As you might have guessed, I’m a huge black and white fan… it’s kind of my thing. But when people hire me to come to their events – baptisms, birthday parties, etc., I like to show them the photos in color, too. Color is just such a big part of these kind of celebrations, and it’s fun to think about photos in a different way when I shoot color.

So, as you might be able to guess, I spent Sunday morning at a fantastic 1st birthday party – everyone had tons of fun. I’ve been taking pictures of this family for years now, and I was honored to have been asked to join them at this rockin’ celebration.

There are tons of photos I still need to go through from the party, so it’ll be late next week before I finish them all up for you, but I’ll let you know as soon as they’re ready.

Thanks so much for including me, I loved being part of your celebration, and can’t wait to show you all the pictures!

Twinkling eyes, every time

Here’s another little one I’ve known since she was just a wee girlie. Her mom and I were in the same mom’s group in Somerville when our girls were first born, so it’s really fun for me to see how she grows every time I take her picture. Here she is at her first photoshoot with me, at my Sept ’06 Jimmy Fund Studio Day…

I just love how fair her skin is, and how fantastic her blue eyes look with this adorable little blue smock dress:

And then that Halloween, I got to capture G dressed up as a leopard. Not many cuter leopards out there.

And then this Halloween (’07), I got to experience another of G’s costumes… this time a ladybug, of course.

And now last week, at the 1:30pm appointment of my Jimmy Fund Studio Day, 2 1/2 year old G arrived, and yay – she was a pleasure. Isn’t that grin killer?

Do you believe her mom said she refuses to pose for pictures at home? Isn’t it always the way? Put her in the lights in the studio, though, and she was hilarious!

And I love all her different expressions. Ahhhhhh! :)

And this one needed to be color – those eyes with that pink dress… just so lovely.

I love dimples

my Jimmy Fund Studio Day 11:30am appointment:

This little guy has three older brothers, but mom brought him in for my Jimmy Fund Studio day all by himself. I love this shot with mom’s cool zebra shoes and her bright green shirt, not to mention the best rolls and squishy legs…

Next to dimples, I also just adore arm rolls. I guess I’m in the right line of work.
