Go big or go home

I just looked through this handful of my favorite shots from this session, and they reminded me of that expression “go big, or go home”.  These adorable girls had big expressions for the whole session.  Look first at these BIG smiles:

And everyone with big smiles here, too – except the pugs, who don’t, I guess, do “big”.

Now we did have one moment of the other kind of big… big wails:

But mere moments later (literally, I looked at the timestamp – this shot was 14 seconds after the above shot) – S was back to being thrilled by her dad’s playing…

And do you believe this grin?

The tongue’s the best part.  Well, that and the dimple.  Oh, and the thigh roll.  Oh, ok, and the pug in the bottom corner.  I guess I like this shot a little bit.

Sister time. :)

A girl and her bubble wand

I love how big and gorgeous G has gotten since the last time I saw her!  Her curls are killer, too.

She had incredible focus on her bubbles – loved chasing them around the garden…

Love as she bites her tongue as she focuses here:

Mama brought out a book to read, and G was so excited when she caught sight of it.

Pensive pretty lady:

See what I mean about the curls?  Wonderful to see you guys!

Two lovely ladies at the Public Garden

This marks the first of a dozen or so Public Garden sessions from last weekend that I’ll be blogging over the next couple of weeks.  Sunday was such an incredible day for photos, I had such a great time getting photos of all these families playing together in the gorgeous Garden. This first mama and her daughter met me bright and early, at 9am, and the Garden was relatively deserted.  It was also still a bit chilly, but they were troopers.  I love this, by the water:

Beautiful big girl R, complete with funky flower headband:

Mama and her sweet on the Make Way for Ducklings statue together:

A little running around, Hancock tower in the background:

Flying in the air:

A girlie hug:

And lastly, some giggles by the gorgeous flowers.  Wonderful to see you guys!

You both are so beautiful. So hard to choose a favorite, they are all my favorites, the one with Ruby and the duck is very sweet and the two of you on the park bench is cuddly cute also!

Somehow these pictures capture your wonderful spirits — you two bring out the best in nature, because you have the best natures!

They are all terrific shots; I especially like the one of Barbara hugging Ruby…it’s the close up so there isn’t as much of the lovely Boston backdrop, but with these two beauties, who needs a skyline!!

Marianne Duggan - May 4, 2010 - 9:53 am

Beautiful!!

Nursery School Photography? Sure.

When my older daughter started nursery school last year, I heard from her school that they were interested in trying something different for the school photos.  They asked me to go for it, and last year I did, and it was fantastic. Well, last year I was 8 1/2 months pregnant when I was shooting school photo day, so fantastic wasn’t the word I would have used back then, but the photos were adorable, and the achy back was short-lived ;)

This year, in Annie’s 2nd year in her nursery school, I did it again, and this year was even better (no belly to contend with on my end!).  The kids were hilarious and adorable, and I can’t wait to do it again next year.  I loved it so much I wanted to offer my services to other nursery schools, if they’re interested in trying something different this year.  Here are a few cuties from this year (thanks to their moms and dads for letting me share their photos here!).

I encourage parents to bring siblings in for photos, too. ‘Cause nothing beats a siblings shot:

I try to get all the kids to make crazy faces, too, so I can make a “crazy face” collage for the school.  Well, this one’s not so much crazy as jazz-hands-y ;)

Peek-a-boo!

Even baby sisters sometimes show up, and show off a smirk:

What are you gonna do?

The style, as you can kind of tell, is just a little different from standard school photos.  Of course I get the standard sitting there, smiling shot for grandma’s wall, don’t worry.  I just get a few others, too.  Here are my two, doing what they do all over my house (and for once I’m not yelling – let GO of your SISTER!)

Each parent gets an individual link to their child’s photos for online ordering for 2 weeks after the shoot.  Expressions are natural, and I think, pretty incredible.  But that’s thanks to the gorgeous kids, not me.

I bring in lights and a white backdrop, just so we get super simple backgrounds and really focus on the kids’ expressions.  It’s also nice because we don’t have to worry about rescheduling for weather.  I don’t charge the school at all – the parents just order their prints on a one-off basis from me a few weeks after the shoot.  Nursery school print prices are half the price of my standard prints.  For more information about having me take pictures at  your nursery school, send me an email to jess (at) bostonbabyphotos.com and I can send you some more information.

You spin me right round, baby

As I went back through these pictures to choose my favorites, tons of the ones that made me smile the most had 4 year old N upside-down. She had such fun getting tossed around during our pictures last weekend, it was the best.

This was my 8th photoshoot with little N – starting when she was a wee one of only 4 weeks old, through her six month pictures, her baptism, her 1 year old birthday party, and 2, 2 1/2, 3… and now she’s such a big girl of 4! It was so wonderful to carry on a conversation with someone I’ve known for so long – and now all of a sudden she’s so communicative, so seemingly grown-up. She is a delight, and I love when I get the chance to see her.

OK, ok. Enough yammering – get to the pictures!

This is my favorite, hands down. LOVE everyone’s expressions, and the hand in the air is just the icing on the cake.

How old are you now? Love the consideration as she counts it out for me.

Almost as tall as mama:

A squeeze from Dad brings a huge dimpled grin:

Grandma and N ponder the snow…

And more crazy upside-down tosses:

Last Christmas tree shot of the year, I bet…

Wonderful wonderful to see you guys as always. Thanks so much for having me back!

Beautiful as always! It must be delightful to watch a child grow as you record that for the family.

Season of giving

You know what’s funny? Location shooting with two kids in tow when it’s 30 degrees out and you’re losing the light. Well, actually, I don’t know if funny is the right word. ;)

Normally I’d never bring my own kids on a photoshoot (actually, I’ve never brought either of them before – not likely to be repeated), but this one was a quickie, for my friend Amy at Chubbybum Cards. She had this cool idea of getting photos of her kids putting money into a Salvation Army bucket, so that she could make a card for herself with a giving theme. But I had visions of the yucky Stop & Shop parking lot, without any light… crowded with people… so I tried to dissuade her. But then the other day I was walking out of Macy’s at the South Shore Plaza and I looked across the parking lot at the setting sun and called her. “Amy! I found the perfect bucket with the light I want! Meet me here at 3:30pm tomorrow and we can get photos for your card!” (I may have said it with not quite so many exclamation marks in my voice.) So I zipped over to the Plaza after preschool pickup today and met Amy and her two gorgeous kiddos. You’d never know I had a 4 yr old wrapped around my leg and a wailing six month old in her stroller behind me as we shot this, right?

Luckily it doesn’t even matter – this shot makes me smile so much – the two guys walking into the frame in the back cracking up are the best part.

Can’t wait to see what she comes up with for her card :)

Star Wars and a bright xmas tree

This past Saturday was raining buckets, and I called these guys and said – I think we should do this after the holidays are over. It’s just too gross out, and I know O will have a better time if we can go outside. We went back and forth, and his mom told me she had the tree up… and wanted to get some xmas cards done… we’d already rescheduled due to weather a bunch of times this fall… so we went for it.

(By the way, what has been UP with our weekend weather this fall? Nuts!)

So when I hear that someone has their tree up, I picture nice twinkley lights as a background, but not really that much of an impact on my ambient light for the photos. I was so excited when I saw their funky white artificial tree – complete with super lighting! Look at this – my top pic for their xmas card shot this year:

This handsome boy is four this year – his fourth photoshoot with me. Wow, so big!

I couldn’t resist. Totally cheesy, I know. But I *LOVE* ;)

I love this, especially the glow from the tree on him:

Kooky kid :)

Han Solo’s holiday card picture (complete with matching Star Wars shirt in the bkgrd):

And anyone who follows my blog knows what a sucker I am for eyelashes.
See…

Great to see you guys!

A house of love and books

I started my day on Sunday with a wonderful little 2 year old girl. Her grandma called me months ago, and told me all about little sweet H. Her cerebral palsy means that she sometimes has a tough time in new environments, so her grandma thought an in-home photoshoot would be a great holiday present for her mom and dad.

What was wonderful to see was H and her grandma spending such nice time together… reading books is their favorite activity. H’s eyes lit up as she looked through the books:

She did a great job holding her head up while they looked at books, too – pointing and recognizing her favorite sections of the books. This is really hard for her, and she did so well:

She took a break in the middle of the shoot to watch a bit of her favorite Mickey Mouse on TV, and I’ve found this with other children I’ve photographed who’ve spent a lot of time in the hospital – often for them, TV is almost a stimulant. It’s really neat to see. Look at that grin!

Taking a quiet moment with grandma reading a book:

And Janet, you’ll have to correct me if I’m wrong, but I think H is doing one of her signs here – am I right?

Happy girl!

And after digging through her toys, she found a favorite toy :)
It was really wonderful to spend time with you guys. Can’t wait to show you the rest of the photos!

What a beautiful girl!

Oh four, I know you well

I’ve been taking pictures of little Miss E since she was just one, and now she’s a big girl of nearly four. I am sooo familiar with the antics of little four year old girls (I have one at home), and this photo illustrated a four year old moment so well I had to highlight it. Hilarious!

Crazy faces and all:

But she can’t hide her gorgeousness:

I love this, as she giggles with her mom and dad:

And runs around with them a bit:

But Dad caught her. I love this hug, it’s so real.

And one more four year old expression, just to make you laugh… Great to see you guys!

Energetic, fun and three

I arrived at C’s house this past weekend to find her standing on the coffee table, undressed, doing a fun dance. I knew when I saw her jumping around that we were going to have a great time taking pictures. Her mom had mentioned to me before the shoot that C is hard of hearing and therefore doesn’t speak – but you would never know it when you play with her. She’s just like any other three year old: crazy! :) Here she is on her tricycle, with a mischievous look in her eye:

While we were still inside, C took me upstairs to her room and showed me her jewelry – I love this profile one of her:

She and I played some games on her couch:

And she was fascinated by my shiny lens. I love this one :)

Here we have the crazy 3 year old pic:

And then we went outside to the park. It was 3pm, and at this time of year we get wonderful shadows and side lighting at 3pm… look at the energy in this photo as she zips around:

Peek-a-boo!

Slowing down for a moment:

And this is one of my favorites on the swing. So much fun to meet you guys. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

“You guys really want more pictures?”

Doesn’t this expression say so much? Mom, Jess, are you guys serious? Are we really going to take MORE pictures of me and my brother? I have to admit, I look at this picture and at this time of year I kind of feel like this ;) It’s making me giggle just to look at it.

But here’s younger brother B, hanging out inside during last weekend’s rainstorm:

And Janet, this one is my new ALL TIME favorite of the boys. I adore adore adore their expressions here as they look at each other. Just too perfect.

With this one a close second. Love.

Happy guys in cute shirts :)

What’s a brother picture without one tongue sticking out, after all? Wonderful to see you guys as always.

Monte and his siblings

I am so into this shot of this family’s sweet pup Monte. The kiddos in the background become secondary to his handsomeness :) Don’t you imagine it’s the way every dog imagines themselves in their owner’s eyes?

Oh OK, we’ll look at some pictures of the kids too. Aren’t they gorgeous?

They have a killer roof deck, and this shot with the Pru in the background is fun for so many reasons. Smallest sister D is so not the “jump off the bench” idea. Isn’t her expression perfect?

Another fantastic moment with all three:

Hugs and kisses for mama:

Silly faces behind dad:

Big sister L, who is all of a sudden super tall, elegant, and a lovely big girl.

Middle brother E, and his perfect grin:

And little sister D is all of a sudden a little girl instead of a baby – beautiful!

Wonderful to see you guys as always.

Oh, and last but never least, the star of the show…

Brave and inspiring (not to mention dapper!)

Sweet J has been through so much in his three short years. His parents put a smile on their faces and on everyone around them, though – letting J’s sweetness shine right through:

Everybody likes to fly:

But when we went to the park on the swings, J’s pure delight shone! I love this one as he gazes at the sky and loves the movement of the swing:

He loved getting pushes from his parents:

And got a kick out of having dad behind him for a push:

Peek-a-boo!

And then back to the swing, because nothing could compare:

He got some serious height!

And a loving gaze at mama, “Thanks for taking me to the park!”

And I couldn’t forget Mom and Dad’s first baby, Rocky. Great to see all of you again this year!

J is soo precoius! nice to see him having so much fun!

Hopscotch in the leaves

Little sister C is getting so big! I didn’t really think about it as these guys got their chalk and drew their hopscotch on the driveway last weekend, but it ended up looking so great in the photos. I love her Mary Janes (Mary Jane’s?) as she hops:

They had a bit of fun playing inside, too…

But we really couldn’t beat the fall leaves and pretty light outdoors. Love the toothless grin:

Both little guys got a kick out of swinging:

And running straight at me:

So fun to play in the leaves with you guys!

A happy, beautiful three year old girl

I’ve seen this sweet girl every six months since she was first born – and every time I see her I’m thrilled and amazed at her wonderful energy and perfect smile. She started off a bit shy…
