“Every time I look at this picture of Sam a dozen thoughts go through my head about what he is thinking. Is he wondering if it will ever stop raining? Is he looking to see if a plane is going to fly by the top of building next door? Is he imagining the different shapes in the clouds? Is he hoping he gets what he wants for his birthday? Or is he wondering if his twin sister Ellie will ever leave him alone? He is such a thoughtful little boy I bet he is wondering when someone will come over and give him a big smooch.

“Katie is actually looking down from the top of a slide in this picture, looking down at her little sister. I love the moment Jess caught her in…”Look at me, Lila, I am a big girl…”(and the implied, “you’re not”) I also LOVE the light on her summer curls…

“Jess took this picture of my son, Ryan, and dog, Sam, when Ryan was about four months old. I love it because Jess captures Sam’s sweet gentleness and Ryan’s innocence in this one moment. It’s perfect!

“Three times Jess has graced my home to capture the light of my child.
Once as a tiny infant barely strong enough to lift her own head. Jess captured both her minuteness and (to my surprise) the softness of new motherhood.
Once as a toddler celebrating her first year, gleefully charging down the driveway on her own two feet. Jess captured this glee and (to my dismay) the evidence of our broken marriage, two proud parents sitting awkwardly together for a family photo.
Once as a two year old, in charge of herself and the world. Jess captured her independence and (to my extreme delight) the reminder that our broken marriage is not broken but a new kind of family: with new form, texture, and solidity. A family shaped differently than most, to be sure, but a family nonetheless, with parents and child loving each other deeply, spread out across multiple homes, and welcoming new people into the circle we call family.
It is with a joyfully bursting heart that I look at this, one of my favorites, of the three of us. Because Jess unwittingly tracked not just the growth of our child, but the growth of a family into what it is today: happy.

It’s been raining cats and dogs around here for days… weeks now. When I talked to these parents a few days before their shoot, we decided we were going to go ahead, rain or shine, since we thought we’d mostly be inside anyway. And then there was this window of sunshine! I think it was brought on by this adorable little girl! She had the best wrist rolls, chubby thighs… and her expressions were priceless:

Some tummy tickles:

Had to widen this shot up a bit to show their hilarious cat in the corner of the frame… don’t you wonder what she’s thinking?

Don’t you love the wrinkles on the bottom of the feet?

Gorgeous eyelashes on this little sweet girl:

And she had to show off a fantastic beret, of course.

Even she thought it looked great:

So nice to meet you guys!
So this shoot was a bit different – Sara (mom) takes lots of gorgeous photos of her daughter all the time, but she has no photos of herself with her daughter (a situation I’m very familiar with). So this shoot was a time for us to get mommy/daughter pictures. I feel like I should have posted this a month or so ago before Mother’s Day instead of Father’s Day!
To start off, this is my absolute favorite shot from the day. Just love this.

And we got some sweet classic ones:

Sara had asked for some urban-style photos… so I talked this truck driver into driving behind this shot for me, just to up the “urban” feel… ;)

These guys were BOTH up for anything. Dancing on park benches, anyone?

Shoulder rides…

Even stopping for a rest and a cuddle. What’s better than that?

I had a wonderful time celebrating girls and mommies with you guys today. All your pics are coming soon!

OK, so I’m having so much fun getting to know a whole new batch of babies who’ll be my Sadie’s age as they get bigger. I have this whole “generation” of children born about 3 1/2 or 4 years ago that I’ve had fun taking pictures of over the years, managing to remember their ages pretty well because they match up with my Annie. And now I get a whole new group! Does this mean I need to keep having children every few years? ;)
But this lovely lady was a treat at 5 weeks old:

Giving her mama some sweet smiles:

I love her eyes in this one – aren’t they pretty?

And I had to include this one because her nose is just too adorable!

And cuddled in a blanket, I love the hands:

The inevitable breakdown, of course:

And those tiny fingers wrapped around her mom’s finger – I love how this one shows how very very tiny she is right now.
So wonderful to meet you – thanks for a great photoshoot.

I’ve been taking pictures of this wonderful family for five years now, for the newborn pictures of three of the four of them now! I can’t even explain how amazing it is to see families grow like this, I just love it. Baby E was born three months ago, and she’s a beautiful pink sweetheart, with three big brothers to look out for her.

They each love her so much – nearly 3 year old brother G (um, how did you get to be almost 3??):

Five year old big brother N:

And 7 year old biggest brother K makes her giggle:

Isn’t she just lovely? I was in love with the tutu onesie. Babies R’ Us, apparently. Time for me to shop for my little ballerina, I think…

So I know I don’t usually blog so many pictures of one photoshoot, but I just have to show you a few more. We have fabulous individual shots of each of the boys. Doesn’t G look handsome as anything here?

And I love this of N as he hollers from the swingset :)

And even K got some good giggles in. I love this crazy one, too.

Can’t forget a nutty boy tongue pic:
And last but never least, a chubby bellied sweet girl with a beautiful smile.

I loved seeing you guys, thanks for having me!

The last time I saw this sweet girl she was only 18 months old, and now she’s a big three year old girl. I love this giggling picture with her parents:

Doesn’t she have fantastic curls?

Every hairdo, sweet as can be.

I love the way the light catches the plant growing on the side of this next shot. Can you tell I spend my weekends taking photographs and not gardening? I never know what plants are called! Nothing this beautiful grows in my yard at home :)

Pushing the hammock:

Getting a lift from her dad:

And then a lift from mom, too. Isn’t it neat the way the sunlight frames her face here, and makes her so obviously the focus of all our attention?

I loved spending time with you guys yesterday, thanks again for having me out. Have a great rest of your summer!
A year or so after college, Carole and I lived together with another good friend, and thinking back to the fun and crazy times in that apartment in Brighton, I don’t think we’d ever have guessed we’d someday have girls the same age. She and her husband welcomed their second daughter earlier this year, and her big sister was very excited to show her off to me:

Aren’t they both just gorgeous? The 4 year old big girl and her baby (almost 5 month old) sister:

Now, again, if you know these guys, don’t mention it to Erik (the girls’ dad) because it’s a Father’s Day surprise, OK? We wanted to get some sweet mommy/daughter pictures to give to Erik for his first Father’s Day as dad of two:

I think we did pretty well :)

Not to mention tons of great ones of the girls:

Couldn’t you just eat her up?

And we wiped the baby out, completely. Big sister was very tender with her when we went to visit her upstairs after she’d fallen asleep.

Carole, thanks so much for having me come take pictures – I can’t wait to hear what Erik thinks in a couple of weeks!
Sunday we had a beautiful sunny day – the perfect day for a trip to the playground. All the other shoots I’ve done with these guys over the years have been in their home, so we decided to change it up and go to a nearby playground. They found lots of fun stuff to do:

We had to get great swinging shots of each of them. What a big girl!

And sweet J – I love this as he peers over the edge of the swing at me:

And big brother, loving it:

Helping cross the street:

I just love these curls:

Even when they got in her face – they still look fantastic. Messy hair means you’re having fun! Great to see you guys again :)

Look at the fun these guys have together!

Not to mention checking out the baby and her bubble blowing skills:

If you know these guys, don’t tell their dad about this shot – I think it’s the perfect Father’s Day present!

Catching their fun mommy as she runs away:

Handsome big boy:

Lovely big sister:

And sweet, hilarious baby sister:

The twins give baby sister a big snuggle:

So fun to see you guys again!
This past weekend, I was lucky enough to meet three different families in the Public Garden for photos three days in a row. I even got a street parking space two of the three days… how’s that for parking karma?
This gorgeous girl’s mama remembered to bring bubbles, and we started off playing a bit with those in the sun. I love this pensive one best.

And M loved jumping around with some help from her mom:

And she zipped across the walkway at one point, going to check out something important on the other side… but when her mom asked her to show us her belly button, she obliged :)

Isn’t she lovely?

A sweet hug for Manhattan, her beloved piggy:

Hanging out with Robert McCloskey’s ducks (and on a sunny Saturday in June, it was tough to get a shot where three of the ducks weren’t being ridden by happy toddlers, believe me!)
So great to meet you guys!
